The IndexNow missing from Google Search Console

Index now. Please. Bing takes IndexNow pings, Google does not, and it does not index everything you publish. So you open Search Console, paste a URL, click Request indexing and repeat every day until the quota runs out. Indexnow is a free skill for Claude Code and Codex that does the asking for you, in your own browser, and remembers what to retry.

Why you have to ask Google every day

Google has no IndexNow. Bing and other engines accept the IndexNow protocol: one request tells them a page was added or changed. Google said it would test the protocol in November 2021 and has not adopted it since.

The manual route is one URL at a time, with a quota. For an ordinary page the only way to ask is URL Inspection in Search Console. Google says there is a quota for submitting individual URLs, does not publish the number, and says asking again for the same URL does not make it faster. The Indexing API is only for job postings and livestream videos.

Fewer pages get in without asking. Since late May 2025 site owners have reported pages moving to “Crawled, currently not indexed”. Marie Haynes reviewed about 40 sites and found mostly thin or old pages dropped. Google has not confirmed a change.

So a new pricing page or a fixed article can wait for weeks. A request gets a page crawled sooner. It does not guarantee indexing. Indexnow makes the asking steady, ranked and remembered.

How it works

  1. 1

    You run one command

/indexnow example.com, with an optional hint such as “changed pricing page”. Your agent opens Search Console in the Chrome profile you are already signed in to.

  2. 2

It finds and ranks your pages

GSC sitemaps, robots.txt and internal links build the inventory. Each page gets a business value from 1 to 3 with a reason, so the pricing page goes before the tag archive.

  3. 3

    It inspects, then asks

For each candidate it reads the URL Inspection result. Pages that are not indexed, or changed in a meaningful way, get Request indexing, with a screenshot as proof.

  4. 4

It stops when Google says so

It keeps going until GSC shows its own quota message and saves the exact text. The next run tries again. No guessed limit of 10 a day.

  5. 5

    It follows up

Accepted requests are checked again after 3, 7 and 14 days. Pages Google still ignores go to a dead-letter queue with the inspection evidence and a suggested fix.

What it looks like

Shortened. Example input and output.

Claude Code
/indexnow example.com changed pricing page
Inventory: 412 URLs from 3 sitemaps and internal links
Inspected 18: 11 indexed, 7 not indexed
Requested: /pricing (changed, value 3), /features/sso (value 3), /blog/migrate-from-wordpress (value 2) and 6 more
GSC quota message after 9 accepted requests, saved with a screenshot. Next run: tomorrow.
Re-check due: 4 pages on October 29, 2 on November 2
Dead-letter queue: /docs/old-api has a noindex tag. Remove it or drop the page.
Workspace: ~/indexnow/example.com

What you get

  • Finds your pages from GSC sitemaps, robots.txt and internal links, and ranks them by business value with a reason.
  • Requests indexing until GSC shows its real quota message. No guessed daily limit.
  • Retries after 3, 7 and 14 days, then moves pages Google still ignores to a dead-letter queue with suggested fixes.
  • Tracks every language version separately and favors your main language.
  • Keeps a readable log, screenshots and the full history in ~/indexnow on your computer.

I run it on my own site

On ciunkos.com, as of October 26, 2026: Indexnow found 25,509 URLs, inspected 90 pages in Search Console, and 26 of them were not in Google’s index. In four days it got 25 indexing requests accepted.

GSC stopped it with a quota message after 3 accepted requests on one day and after 11 on two others. The limit moves, which is why the skill asks until Google says stop instead of counting to a fixed number.

Who it is for

  • Founders and small teams whose new pages sit in “Discovered, currently not indexed”.
  • Sites in more than one language, where Google skips the translations.
  • Anyone who already opens Search Console every morning to paste URLs.

Who it is not for

  • Sites with millions of pages. Fix crawl budget and internal links first.
  • Thin or spammy pages. Asking does not make Google want them; the dead-letter queue tells you why.
  • Job postings and livestreams. Use the Indexing API.

Install

Pick the place you already work in. Every option installs the same open-source skill. Needs Claude Code or Codex with computer use (screenshots and clicks in your Chrome window), Node 20 or later, and owner or full access to the Search Console property. claude.ai and ChatGPT give a skill no access to your browser, so it does not run there.

Claude Code

Inside a session: add the marketplace, install the pack, reload. The pack also brings the other skills.

Clone the repository and symlink the skill into ~/.agents/skills. Start a new session and call it with $indexnow.

terminal
git clone https://github.com/Ciunkos/skills ~/ciunkos-skills
mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills
ln -s ~/ciunkos-skills/skills/indexnow ~/.agents/skills/indexnow

Does not run in claude.ai, ChatGPT.

Done for you

Want pages Google wants to index?

Asking is half of it. The other half is pages worth indexing: fast, static, with clean sitemaps and internal links. I move company sites off WordPress to static pages you edit with Claude, and turn AI-built MVPs into products. Or check for free whether ChatGPT and Claude already name you, with AI Visibility Desk.

FAQ

Questions

Is this the IndexNow protocol?
No. IndexNow is the protocol Bing and other engines use; Google does not. The name is the joke and the promise: Indexnow does for Google Search Console what IndexNow does for Bing. It sends no IndexNow pings. For Bing, use the protocol directly.
Does a request guarantee indexing?
No. Google decides. A request gets the page crawled sooner; whether it is indexed depends on the page. Indexnow checks the result later and tells you which pages still fail and why.
How many URLs can it request a day?
Google does not publish the number. On ciunkos.com the quota message came after 3 to 11 accepted requests a day in October 2026. Indexnow asks until that message appears and tries again on the next run.
Is it safe for my Google account?
It clicks the same Request indexing button you would, in your own browser, and stops at Google’s quota message. No API keys, no private Google endpoints, no CAPTCHA solving. If a CAPTCHA appears, it stops and asks you.
Can it run every day on its own?
It does not install a scheduler. The README has a prompt for your agent’s own scheduler. The computer and the browser have to be on when it runs.
Where is my data?
In ~/indexnow/<site> on your computer: state, an exact event journal, a readable log and screenshots. Nothing is sent to me.
Does it work in ChatGPT or claude.ai?
No. Both run skills without access to your browser and your files. Use Claude Code or Codex.
